Dog shot to death Heiskell, TN (US)Incident Date: Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 County: Anderson
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Daniel Reid Smith
A Heiskell man was arrested Saturday after he reportedly shot and killed his neighbor's dog.
Daniel Reid Smith, 31, 125 Pine Hill Lane, Heiskell, was charged with reckless endangerment and the intentional killing of animals. He was taken to the Anderson County jail, where he posted a $30,000 bond and was released on Sunday.
Smith reportedly shot and killed a three-year-old Chihuahua who belonged to his neighbors, Fay, 72, and Ralph Loriaux, 65, 117 Pine Hill Lane. The dog walked into Smith's yard on April 13 after Fay Loriaux let her out of the house.
According to reports, Fay Loriaux followed the dog, Rosie, and called her to come after seeing her go from her own backyard into a neighbor's backyard and then into Smith's yard. As Fay Loriaux called Rosie, she heard a shot and saw her dog fall over.
Loriaux went to her dog, found her dead and reportedly confronted Smith. Loriaux told Deputy Jonathan Acker that Smith admitted to shooting the dog and said to her, "Haven't you heard of leashes and collars?"
Loriaux carried her dog's body home and called the Sheriff's Department, reports said.
Acker reported that he checked the dog's injury and found that it had been shot through the left eye with a small caliber weapon. At that point, he took out warrants for Smith's arrest, reports said.
Acker added that he saw a blood stain in Smith's yard.
The Oak Ridger contacted Ralph Loriaux, who said Smith shot Rosie "right in front of my wife." He said Rosie was shot on her third birthday.
He said he and his wife had not had any prior problems with Smith and had lived in Heiskell for about a year. He said Smith's young son tried to hit Rosie with a stick on another occasion.
Neighbors had told him that Smith had shot at dogs before and that at least one of his neighbors' dog "went missing," he said.
"We're still sick over it," Ralph Loriaux said. "It's heart wrenching."
On April 14, Smith filed a vandalism report with the Sheriff's Department alleging that someone cut tires on a car belonging to someone visiting his house. Reports said Smith told Deputy Denver Waddell that he shot his neighbor's dog the day before and someone may have assumed the car belonged to him.
The Oak Ridger attempted to contact Smith for comments. References« TN State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Anderson County, TN
