Authorities say more than three dozen people have been cited for cockfighting after a bust in South Carolina.

Hampton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Shellie Murdaugh said 37 people from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas and Mexico were arrested at around 9 a.m. Saturday. First offense cockfighting is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $1,000.

A judge set $500 bond for each defendant on Saturday.

Murdaugh says none of the defendants yet had attorneys.
