A police chase recently led to an unusual discovery.
Deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office tried to serve an arrest warrant for a violation of probation on 35-year-old Dwayne Collins at his Hurlock home. According to police, Collins ran into the woods. Deputies followed and they say they found more than a dozen neglected dogs there.
According to the Dorchester County Humane Society, a total of 16 dogs were removed that included two rottweilers, two beagles and about 12 pit bulls.
Humane Society Executive Director Cheryl Everman said most of the dogs were neglected. Some were dehydrated, malnourished, and scarred. Everman said each of the neglected dogs reacted differently to being rescued.
"We had a couple of them that just kind of went to the back and hunkered down and some became very aggressive because they were afraid of everything. That's just their natural response it is the whole fight or flight thing," Everman said.
Everman said that temperament can determine whether a dog is able to be put up for adoption.
"We'll work with them to rehabilitate them, the ones that can be rehabilitated," Everman said. "But because some dogs, are just way too aggressive, they become a danger to society. So they will have to be euthanized."
Police are still investigating the case and trying to determine who owns the dogs. The owner could face charges of animal cruelty and neglect. References |
