Dozens of "wanna-be" puppy owners are flooding the Tewksbury Animal Hospital with phone calls looking to adopt an abused pit bull.

Someone found the 2-month-old dog wandering on the street. When the animal control officer brought him to the police station, "I noticed the ears were cut and they were bleeding...There were pieces of skin hanging off," said Officer Brian Fernald. "The tail was cut right off, too."

Fernald said someone performed a crude surgery on the dog with a blade or scissors. Cropped ears and tails can indicate dog fighting.

"If the ears are chopped, another dog has nothing to grab onto in a fight," said Fernald.

A veterinarian has cleaned-up the cuts, and treated the dog with antibiotics.

"Without any pain medication...I can't imagine him going through that," said veterinary technician Sarah Quigley. "It has to be excruciating pain."

Police are now looking for the owner, who could face animal cruelty charges.

On the bright side, the veterinarian says the dog has made a miraculous recovery.

Fernald has named him "Pup Dog" and so many people have called to adopt him, police say they'll have to hold a lottery.

Donations, which should be made out to the Town of Tewksbury, can be dropped off or mailed to the:

Tewksbury Health Department
999 Whipple Road
Tewksbury, MA 01876.
