Dog beaten with shovel, left to die
Salisbury, MD (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 18, 2009
County: Wicomico

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jackie Newcomb Perry

Authorities on Wednesday arrested a Salisbury man accused of striking a dog with a shovel and leaving it severely injured.

Salisbury police say that at around 1:42 p.m. animal control officers with the department responded to the 100 block of Carrolton Avenue for a reported animal cruelty complaint.

According to police, officers met with a witness who observed 59-year-old Jackie Newcomb Perry come onto private property and strike the dog in the head with a shovel for no apparent reason.

The dog was taken to a local animal hospital where it was kept overnight due to the injuries it had received.

Police arrested Perry on a warrant charging him with animal cruelty and mutilate an animal. He was released on bond pending a May 4 trial in Wicomico County District Court.
