Dog dragged behind vehicle
Martins Ferry, OH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 18, 2009
County: Belmont

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Authorities in Belmont County are looking for the person who dragged a dog down a local road.

The dog, a male beagle mix, was reportedly tied to the back of a pickup truck and pulled behind the vehicle Wednesday. It is reportedly doing better today.

A female caller's frantic 911 call alerted the county's Dog Warden of the incident. When assistant warden Glenn Harris arrived on the scene on Ohio 647 just outside of Martins Ferry, he found the animal bleeding and a trail of blood on the roadway.

According to the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, the animal was immediately transported to New Horizon Animal Hospital in St. Clairsville where it was treated for its injuries. A portion of the 911 call was released by the 911 center.

"He had a dog and he was dragging a dog on the back of his truck," the woman reported. "It looked like the dog was tied to the back of the truck and he was dragging the dog."

The dog warden's assistant agreed. "The dog was either underneath or behind the car, near the old Steeple Valley School in Martins Ferry, said Harris. "When I arrived on the scene, I saw the dog. It was bad."

Dr. Jim Moore, co-owner of New Horizon Animal Hospital, said the dog was doing better after getting treatment.

"It's got severe burns or abrasions down both front arms, on his chest and around his muzzle, Moore said. "It's back feet are actually the worst. It was probably trying to get its feet underneath of him as he was dragged.

Authorities said the vehicle in question is an older model blue and white pickup truck with some rust on it. According to the assistant warden, the dog's care is going to be quite costly, and any donations will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be mailed or delivered personally to: The Belmont County Animal Shelter, 45244 National Road West, St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950.

Anyone with any information about who may have done this is urged to call the sheriff's department.
