Hoarding - 27 animals seized New Iberia, LA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 19, 2009 County: Iberia
Charges: Misdemeanor Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: » Jeanette Theriot » Crystal Theriot » Terri Theriot
Bond has been set at $7,500 each for three New Iberia adults and one juvenile who each face 40 counts of cruelty to animals after Iberia Parish Sheriff deputies responded to a complaint at 315 Lake Dauterive Road on Tuesday.
Charged were Jeanette Theriot, a 52-year-old white female, Crystal Theriot, a 21-year-old white female, and Terri Theriot, a 17-year-old white female, as well as a 16-year-old juvenile.
When deputies arrived at the property shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, they observed cats and dogs in cages which contained no food or water. The cages had feces covering the bottom in which the animals had to live.
Deputies inspected the inside of the residence and found dogs, cats, ferrets, rats and rabbits being kept in the same unsanitary conditions. They found animal feces and urine in the home and animals kept in storage areas and bedrooms in the home.
There were 27 animals in the home.
The Iberia Parish Animal Control officer came to the residence and removed 19 dogs, 13 cats, four rats, two ferrets and two rabbits from the home. Deputies arrested three adults and one juvenile.
"To have this many is not frequent," said Capt. Wendell Raborn, PIO. "It's a rare occurrence here, to have this many inside a home in that kind of condition.
"One of our officers noted one cage with eight cats in it, and feces up to 8 inches deep. In some of the dog kennels, feces was running out of the kennel."
The confiscated animals remain with the Iberia Parish Animal Control.
"We checked with shelter; and the animals aren't in that bad a shape, considering," Raborn said. "Physically they're in pretty good condition for the way they were living. But the people weren't taking as good care of them as they should have."
Each individual charged was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center. References |
