Officials say it will be at least two weeks before results come back on a calf that was found dead Tuesday at a Tottenham-area farm.
"When we receive the necropsy, we will know more," Kristin Williams, with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Newmarket head office, said yesterday.
OSPCA officials and police officers responded to the 7th Line residence Tuesday afternoon after a concerned citizen reported a potential case of neglect.
They found 28 dead beef cattle and 24 others were removed from the property and taken to a nearby farm to be fed and receive medical care.
The OSPCA said conditions on the farm included no apparent water or food for the cattle, poor sanitation and no dry bedding. Live and dead animals were being housed together.
Police said the property owner, a 50-year-old man, was found suffering from a medical condition. References
