Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Deputies busted up a major cockfighting ring in Sumner County Saturday.

It happened in Westmoreland, along Pea Ridge Road. Investigators said when they got there, about 50 people were there. About half of them were fighting birds. There were kids there as well. Investigators say most of the people that were busted are local, but a number of people were from Kentucky.

Federal investigators say many come to Tennessee to cockfight because state laws here are more lenient, but some state lawmakers are trying to change that.

Case Updates

Dozens of people have been found guilty for a cockfighting ring in Sumner County. The Westmoreland bust yielded 48 arrests earlier this month.

Officials ended up confiscating 78 roosters and euthanizing them.

All of the suspects were found guilty on a variety of misdemeanor charges -- some for participating and others for watching.

A state lawmaker from Hendersonville is working on a bill that would create stricter penalties for cockfighting.
