More than 50 dead and dying animals found

A city man faces charges after police found the remains of several wild animals and livestock at his home.

Police arrived at 1334 Lans-downe Blvd. on Thursday afternoon to what officers described as a gruesome scene.

After surveying the property, authorities asked the homeowner, Edward Hall, 64, if they could investigate further.

Police found dead goats, rabbits, pigeons and a cow on the property, as well as more than 50 other wild animals and livestock that were alive, but visibly malnourished.

Police on the scene said cages the animals lived in were filthy and covered in feces. All the cages lacked fresh food, water and blankets to keep the animals warm.

They said many of the animal remains were decomposed down to skeletal form, and it looked as if some of the live animals used the carcasses for warmth and food.

Police also discovered that Hall had no gas or electricity inside his home.

The surviving animals were removed from the residence.

Hall was taken into custody and faces charges of cruelty to animals and keeping and maintaining wild animals and livestock.

He will appear in Youngstown Municipal Court at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Hall may face additional cruelty-to-animal charges after an assessment has been completed on the surviving animals.
