Animal cruelty - more than 100 animals found
Perris, CA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jul 1, 2008
County: Riverside

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Julie Lynn Legere

A Gavilan Hills woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to an animal cruelty charge after more than 100 animals were found at her home.

In July, officers of Riverside County Animal Services found horses, dogs, goats, pigs, sheep, llamas, cats, chickens and other fowl at an 8-acre property on Juniper Road in Gavilan Hills.

Deputies arrested Julie Lynn Legere, 45, who was later charged with possession of an assault weapon, possession of marijuana, failure to care for animals and cruelty to animals.

Animal services impounded 24 dogs and said Legere was breeding the dogs and selling them. Officers gave Legere notices that three horses needed to be seen by an equine veterinarian and for the dogs' area to be cleaned.

In addition, the number of animals exceeded county limits. On Wednesday in the Riverside Hall of Justice, Legere pleaded guilty to one count of felony animal cruelty. The other charges were dismissed.

Superior Court Judge Richard Fields sentenced Legere to 36 months probation, including 300 hours of community service.

The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
