Stephanie Gilmore and Trent Day are each sentenced to five-year prison terms on charges stemming from Rhiannon Gilmore's death. The teen's 11-year-old sister found the girl dead in their Cherokee County home last August.

Authorities said Rhiannon, who was wheelchair-bound and lived with cerebral palsy, had been dead for several days.

The skeletal remains of a dog were also found in the yard.

Cherokee Sheriff Roger Garrison said, "This young lady, the 13-year-old victim, suffered cerebral palsy in a bed-ridden state where she had to be cared for full-time."

The teen's mother and Day pleaded guilty to several charges last August concerning Rhiannon's death. Police charged Stephanie with child and animal cruelty, while Day faced charges of concealing a death, cruelty to animals and tampering with evidence.

Georgia's Division of Family and Children's Services underwent major changes after Rhiannon's case revealed numerous complaints about her treatment that went unchecked. Officials fired one worker and a second worker resigned.
