Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Powhatan county authorities want to know who shot a cat with a crossbow. The arrow went through the cat's skull, but the cat survived.

The cat is now recovering at the Powhatan animal shelter. The sheriff's department is investigating this as an act of animal cruelty.

The cat doesn't have a name yet, but "Lucky" might be a nice fit.

"It probably used all nine of its lives," said Powhatan animal control Sgt. Christine Boczar.

Someone found the cat with a 22 inch crossbow bolt arrow sticking out of his head. The cat was picked up by animal control earlier this month in the 4100 block of Old Buckingham road after it had wandered onto somebody's porch.

Sgt. Boczar says they rushed the injured feline to an animal hospital to have the arrow removed. But says the injury looked a lot worse than it was.

"At first it appeared that it was a very serious injury with an arrow through its skull, but actually missed every important area that it could have," said Sgt. Boczar.

Nearly two weeks later, the cat is walking around the animal shelter as if nothing happened with only stitches and bald spots to prove it. The arrow was kept as evidence for when authorities track down the culprit.

Sgt. Boczar says right now, they're looking for leads.

"It's pretty shocking, it's amazing that somebody in our community would do that to an animal it's very sad," said Sgt. Boczar.

The person responsible could face an animal cruelty charge which carries a fine of up to 25 hundred dollars and a year in jail.
