A man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly beheading and disembowelling a kangaroo.

West Australian police charged an 18-year-old Dawesville man after he allegedly killed a kangaroo early yesterday.

Police were called to Estuary Road in Dawesville, south of Mandurah, to investigate reports a group of males had caught a kangaroo and were abusing it.

When they arrived at the scene they found the remains of a kangaroo which had been decapitated, police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said.

A search warrant was conducted on a house yesterday when police seized a number of items allegedly related to the killing.

The man will appear in the Mandurah Magistrates Court on Friday.
