A man threw his girlfriend's dog against a door in a fit of jealous rage, Cook County authorities said today.
The woman immediately took the animal to a veterinary clinic, where the dog was euthanized because of the extent of its injuries, authorities said.
Keith Middleton, 29, was charged with felony animal cruelty.
At a bond hearing today, authorities said Middleton was at his girlfriend's South Side residence on Dec. 12 when he demanded she prove to him that she hadn't just been talking on the phone to a man.
The woman refused, telling him she didn't have to prove anything in her own home. Middleton allegedly picked up her tiny Shih Tzu dog and threatened to throw the dog if she didn't tell him who was on the phone, Assistant State's Atty. Erin Antonietti said.
The woman refused again and told him not to hurt her pet. But Middleton flung the dog against a door, causing the animal to have a seizure, Antonietti said.
Middleton, who has unrelated aggravated battery charges pending against him, fled but was arrested last week. Circuit Judge Raymond Myles ordered him held in lieu of $17,500 bail.
