Bestiality involving dog
Grande Prairie, NS (CA)

Incident Date: Saturday, Dec 6, 2008

Disposition: Dismissed (Conditional)

Person of Interest: Tracy Lynn Blais

A remorseful Tracy Lynn Blais received a conditional sentence Thursday [Feb 12, 2009] for a single charge of bestiality involving her dog -- an act for which she turned herself into police on Dec. 6.

"I just don't know how I could have ever done this. I would have never done something like this," Blais said in court Thursday morning.

Blais, 32 and of Grande Prairie, stood before Judge Morris Golden to be sentenced for the act, which was recorded with a cellphone video and then sent to a friend of Blais.

Blais turned the phone over to police and identified herself as the woman in the video. At her only prior appearance in court for the matter, Jan. 22, she pleaded guilty.

The Crown at the time opted not to proceed by indictment. Crown prosecutor Shannon Davis said, at the time, cases far more severe received minimal sentences.

Fellow Crown prosecutor Tom Hawkesworth echoed that statement in court Thursday, stating the Crown had trouble finding relevant example cases for sentencing proposals.

"Other than the embarrassment of the accused caused by this coming to light, this would appear to be a victimless crime," said Hawkesworth.

Blais revealed she has been in the hospital for the three weeks following her guilty plea, receiving treatment for issues such as depression and anxiety and was released Monday.

"It would not be contrary to policy, and certainly in your best interest, that a conditional discharge be granted," said Golden.

Blais' conditional discharge -- meaning there will be no criminal record -- is pending a two-year period of probation under standard terms and agreement to attend any assessment, counseling and treatment deemed necessary.
