Conure neglected Monterey, CA (US)Incident Date: Monday, Dec 1, 2008 County: Monterey
Disposition: Not Charged
Abuser names unreleased
The SPCA for Monterey County rescued a neglected Mitred Conure in December. The bird, who SPCA staff has named "Tyson" is now available for adoption.
SPCA Humane Officers rescued Tyson after he was found being housed in a dirty cage outside in very cold weather. He had no access to food or water. Due to the stress of the situation and an untreated infection, he had plucked the majority of the feathers off his body.
Tyson is now safe at The SPCA Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, which houses exotic animals in addition to rescuing wildlife. He needs to constantly wear a tiny sweater to reduce his plucking and allow his feathers to grow back. It is possible that some of his feathers might never return, so his adopters will have to keep sweaters on-hand for this special bird.
Conures are social parrots who suffer stress without daily interaction. Mitred Conures are popular pets due to their clown-like and inquisitive disposition, but they also tend to be noisy and are not recommended for inexperienced owners looking for an easy pet.
"Tyson is slightly bossy but he loves company. He will need someone who can give him lots of TLC," says Rosanna Leighton, Wildlife Center Supervisor. "He has special needs, but he's a charming little bird."
