Dog found wth embedded harness
Telford, TN (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 12, 2009
County: Washington

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Randall Treadway

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Annie the basset hound may finally catch a break, but she almost didn't make it to a veterinarian in time to have an embedded harness removed from around her body.

The wound caused by the harness is described as "old and deep" and will require multiple surgeries over the next week at Unicoi Animal Hospital, where she was taken after being picked up by a Knoxville-based dog rescue group.

Randall Treadway, 586 Browning Road, Telford, was charged with cruelty and neglect of an animal by animal control officers with the Washington County Animal Shelter.

Annie was being kept at the nearby home of Treadway's mother in what Leanne Potts of Belly Rubs Basset Rescue described as "an outside pen so dirty the animal was standing in its own poop."

Potts said Treadway's mother originally contacted them in January about surrendering the dog, but the small group lacked the manpower to get a volunteer to the site until this week.

"He immediately took possession of Annie and took her to the vet. She was in such horrible pain from the embedded harness that she was going into shock when she got to the operating table," Potts said.

According to Shelter Director Debbie Dobbs, this was not the first time Annie has passed through the system. She was adopted by Treadway last summer. She was originally being used in a basset breeding mill.

"The breeder canceled out of the business and turned all her dogs over to us. We had quite a few bassets going up for adoption last summer," Dobbs said. "Unfortunately, Annie didn't go to a good home, which really breaks our hearts. We'd love to have the manpower to screen everyone who adopts."

Case Updates

Authorities in northeast Tennessee have charged a Telford man with animal cruelty after finding his dog with a harness imbedded in its skin.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said county animal control officers cited 24-year-old Randall Treadway.

Authorities said Treadway had kept a harness on the Bassett hound until the dog's skin had grown around the device, leaving it imbedded in its body.

The dog is being treated at the Johnson City Animal Shelter and is expected to recover.

Treadway is scheduled to appear Feb. 25 in Jonesborough Sessions Court on one count of animal cruelty.
