Police on Friday arrested Samuel A. Voorhees, 39, of Big Hill Avenue, and charged him with second-degree assault, first-degree cruelty to animals, theft by unlawful taking, more than $300, and a misdemeanor violation of a domestic violence order after responding to a report of an altercation.
Officers responded to a residence in the 400 block Thursday night around 9 and determined that Voorhees had apparently assaulted his wife with a large wooden lamp during an argument over money.
The woman suffered a broken arm in the dispute, police said. Voorhees also had destroyed a big-screen television before fleeing the residence, violating the terms of a domestic violence order that forbids acts of violence or destruction of property.
On Friday afternoon, officers returned to the scene after the victim's father reported that he had gone to the residence following the assault to retrieve a Troy-Bilt lawn mower and a Yardman tiller he had loaned Voorhees.
The items were found to be missing, and the victim's father found Voorhees had allegedly pawned both items.
Voorhees was located in an apartment in the 400 block later that day and was taken into custody.
Shortly after he was arrested, officers returned to the residence when Voorhees' wife discovered her dog dead behind a chair of apparent knife wounds.
Officers recovered the knife, which was linked to Voorhees, at the scene.
Voorhees was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center in lieu of a $12,500 cash bond.

A Madison County grand jury will hear the case of a Big Hill Avenue man accused of breaking his wife's arm in two places during a domestic dispute and killing her pet dog.
Samuel A. Voorhees, 39, is charged with second-degree assault, first-degree cruelty to animals, theft by unlawful taking of more than $300 and violating a domestic violence protection order following a Feb. 5 incident at his home in the 400 block.
In a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Madison District Court, Richmond police officers testified that Voorhees allegedly beat his wife with a large wooden lamp, breaking her left arm in two places and bruising her right arm and back.
Voorhees also allegedly broke a big screen television rented from Rent-A-Center during the fight.
Voorhees is charged with animal cruelty for going back to the house following the argument and killing a pet dog with a knife. Officers seized the knife after arresting Voorhees on Feb. 6 at an apartment complex near the home, and a red substance believed to be blood was on it.
Officer Gary Shaffer also testified in a separate case that Voorhees had pawned a lawn mower and garden tiller worth $2,400 at Wade's Pawn without permission.
The mower was sold to the store's owner in January for $300, while the tiller had been pawned twice.
Madison District Judge Brandy O. Brown sent both cases to the grand jury and raised Voorhees's bond to $22,500 cash, saying his original bond depreciated the severity of the charges. | Source: richmondregister.com - Feb 19, 2009 Update posted on Jul 10, 2011 - 11:39AM |
