An 8-year-old pit bull suffered a broken hip and a broken leg when a dispute between her caretaker and his parents turned violent.

Gwinnett County police say Gregory Britt, 23, spiraled into a rage about 1 a.m. Friday during an argument at a home in the 5200 block of Brownlee Road.

"The witnesses at the scene told officers that the suspect picked up the pit bull and slammed the pit bull against the tailgait of a truck as well as a tree," said Cpl. Dan Huggins.

Britt, who had been watching the dog for a friend, fled the home before police arrived.

Authorities later spotted Britt at the intersection of Rockbridge and Five Forks Trickum roads, standing by his truck. Officers pursued Britt on foot and eventually caught him.

He has been charged with cruelty to animals, obstruction of justice and driving under the influence, police said. Britt is in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

The dog, named Coco, is being treated at the University of Georgia Animal Hospital, according to Gwinnett County Animal Control. Her first surgery is scheduled for Monday.

Anyone wanting to help fund Coco's recovery can call Kathy Bangle at 706-583-0152 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Gregory Britt should be charged with "aggravated animal cruelty" which is a felony in Georgia.
