Officials at the Perry County Humane Society are looking for the person responsible for dumping a dog at their facility, and throwing him several feet over a fence.
They say the person could face felony charges of aggravated animal cruelty.
"He's very afraid and that's something that's going to take long to get over" says Amanda Creely at the Perry County Humane Society.
Trooper was left at the Humane Society last Thursday, but officials say the dachshund wasn't just dumped off by his former owners, he was thrown over a chain link fence
"In Trooper's case, he could have died very easily if he would have landed any differently or if we didn't have the snow to buffer his fall" says Creely.
Trooper suffered a bruised eye and several cuts, and had to spend the night in veterinary care.
"He was on pain medication for the first couple days."
Sadly, Creely says this isn't the first time she's seen examples of animal abuse and neglect.
"When they come in from Animal Control, some dogs are afraid to be touched. Some are skinny with ribs and bones sticking out."
Each year, the no-kill shelter takes in dozens of unwanted animals.
"Last year, we saved probably 92% of adoptable dogs from euthanasia."
Many of the dogs and cats are adopted out to families. That's what Creely hopes will happen for Trooper, though it may be some time before he truly feels safe again.
