Sioux City police and Animal Control are trying to determine who is responsible for severely burning a Sioux City woman's dog.
Majestyk, a seven-month-old female French bulldog, pit bull mix, sustained burns to its eyes, mouth and feet. The dog was found running loose on Transit Avenue last week.
Owner Alexis Simpson said a friend, who gave her the dog when it was just a month old, was watching Majestyk while she worked.
She said her friend picked Majestyk up from her home on Jan. 10. On Jan. 14, Simpson said her friend informed her that he let Majestyk outside, but when he went to get her, she was nowhere to be found. The next day Simpson said she contacted Animal Control.
On Wednesday Simpson said she was at the laundromat when Cindy Rarrat, owner of Sioux City Animal Control, called her and told her she thought Animal Control officers had Majestyk.
Rarrat said today that Animal Control officers picked the dog up after residents spotted it whining and crying in their yard.
"The pupils and the whole eyeball itself was white as though it had cataracts," she said. "It had burns on its mouth and its feet."
Rarrat said veterinarians have not been able to determine whether the dog was burned by chemicals or some other substance.
Simpson saw Majestyk for the first time Thursday at Siouxland Animal Hospital, where the dog will remain for a few more days. She said her dog is recovering, but will always be partially blind due to retina damage.
"It's just kind of sad," she said. "I don't know who would do this."
