Nearly two dozen people have been arrested after Inglewood police raided a home where an illegal cockfighting ring was allegedly based.

Police said Wednesday they found 59 roosters on the property, 12 of them dead, along with $18,000 in cash. Police say they conducted the raid on Saturday while a cockfighting and gambling operation was in progress. Twenty-three people, including one minor, were arrested.

Jesus Vaca, a 42-year-old Compton man, is accused of leading the cockfighting ring. He was booked on a felony while the others were booked on a variety of misdemeanors.

Animal control officers have taken possession of the birds.
