Fifty animals were collected Tuesday by the Humane Society of Missouri during an investigation into animal neglect at a Kennett home.
Twenty-eight dogs and 22 birds were collected from the home at 1607 Russell St. Christine Portmann of the Humane Society of Missouri said the birds will be taken to a ranch in Union, Mo., while the dogs will be triaged at a St. Louis animal shelter.
The investigation began Jan. 3, after Kennett police Cpl. Craig Crow received a request to check on the welfare of an elderly man at the residence. When Crow arrived, a 73-year-old man was hitting the window of the home, yelling for assistance.
Crow saw numerous dogs inside the home and noticed an "overwhelming odor of feces." In his report, Crow also said he saw human and animal feces covering the floors and walls of the residence.
Crow escorted the man, whose name has not been released, from the home. After police contacted the Missouri Department of Aging and the Dunklin County public administrator's office, the man was transported to Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett. Crow then contacted the Humane Society of Missouri and the Kennett Police Department's animal control officers, who saw several dogs in poor condition. Many of the dogs had hair loss and eye infections.
"On some of the dogs, we saw what we thought were sores. But after taking a closer look, we discovered that it was fleas," said Kennett animal control officer Tina Petix. "They were bunched up next to each other and looked like sores."
On the property behind the home, officers found chickens, ducks and guineas in poor condition with no visible food or water.
The conditions led officers to apply for a warrant.
Charges have yet to be filed against the owner of the residence, Carl Warn, 68, but according to Crow, charges could include elder abuse and/or animal abuse. References« MO State Animal Cruelty Map
