Dog severely neglected, resulting in death

Defendant/Suspect: Annette Antonia

A Brighton woman has been banned from keeping animals for life and jailed for 12 weeks after severely neglecting her dog, in a case brought by the RSPCA.

Annette Antonia, 51, pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates' Court to causing unnecessary suffering to her 19-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, Stumpy.

The elderly dog was in such a bad condition when discovered by RSPCA officers that, even after two weeks of hospitalisation and veterinary care, Stumpy sadly had to be put to sleep to end his suffering.

The severity of the neglect had left the dog with head tremors and such poor co-ordination, that he was no longer able to fend for himself.

The court heard veterinary evidence that the animal had been badly neglected for at least six months. The police called in the RSPCA after they investigated complaints from concerned neighbours of a suspiciously bad smell at the dog owner's home.

After the case concluded on Tuesday, 30 December 2008, RSPCA Inspector Gemma Dummer said: "This was a severe case of neglect - the worst I've seen.

"The dog's coat was so badly matted that it was almost impossible to tell one end from the other.

"Stumpy had been neglected over a lengthy period and was in a very bad way when we found him."
