A couple from the coalfields of eastern Kentucky are charged with cruelty to animals and criminal mischief after starving horses were found on their property.
Harlan County Deputy Circuit Court Clerk Barbara Perkins said Edwin and Diane Sullivan remained in jail Wednesday and did not have an attorney.
Perkins said the Sullivans did not enter a plea during an initial appearance in Harlan District Court on Tuesday and the case against them was continued to Monday.
Humane Society president Marcella Chadwick told The Harlan Daily Enterprise that she found five malnourished horses and one dead one after getting permission from the land owner to check his property.
Chadwick said the dead horse was in a ravine and had been covered with freshly cut evergreen branches. References « More cases in Harlan County, KY
