A Kingman man is under arrest after his father was found dead inside a burning mobile home.

The Mohave County sheriff's office began looking for 26-year-old Shawn Avery Guerrero of Kingman after his father was found dead in his home early Saturday.

He was arrested by police in Tempe on an outstanding warrant, and deputies later obtained a first-degree murder warrant.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said on Wednesday that an autopsy shows 59-year-old John Guerrero was shot in the neck and back and died before his home was set on fire.

Shawn Guerrero is being held in Maricopa County jail pending his return to Kingman.

Case Updates

The attorneys in the case of a Kingman man, charged with murdering his father, said Friday they are ready to go to trial as scheduled.

Shawn Avery Guerrero, 29, is charged with first-degree murder, arson, criminal damage, tampering with physical evidence and animal cruelty. He is charged with allegedly shooting his 59-year-old father, John Guerrero, in the back on Sept. 27, 2008, and then burning down the Guerrero's home in north Kingman. John Guerrero's dog was also found dead at the scene. Guerrero was arrested in Tempe several days later.

At a previous hearing, Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen granted a motion to consolidate Guerrero's murder case with his two other criminal cases. Guerrero is also charged with disorderly conduct with a weapon, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and criminal damage after he allegedly shot at a television set with a 9 mm handgun at his mother's home on April 16, 2008, also in Kingman.

Guerrero is also charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a corrections officer after he allegedly refused to obey commands and assaulted two correction officers Feb. 21, 2010, as they entered his cell at the county jail. He was restrained with pepper spray.

Both attorneys in the case said Friday that they are ready to go to trial. The trial before Jantzen is set to begin July 11. Jantzen also previously granted a request to disclose Guerrero's CAT scan to the prosecutors. Guerrero was sent to the Arizona State Hospital in early 2009 and returned to Mohave County in late 2009 after he was found competent to stand trial.

The defense team for a 27-year-old man accused of killing his father tried to have an animal cruelty charge separated from the murder trial because they felt the cruelty charge could prejudice the jury.

Shawn Avery Guerrero is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting his father, 59-year-old John Guerrero, and then setting fire to the family home in the 3000 block of Packard Ave. Sept. 27, 2008.

Deputies with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said John Guerrero had been shot in the neck and back before the fire was started.

Shawn Guerrero was arrested by Tempe police the day after the murder on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant after an attempt to locate was issued. Neighbors allegedly saw Guerrero arrive shortly before the fire started and leave immediately after.

Guerrero also faces charges of arson, criminal damage and tampering with physical evidence, in addition to the charge of animal cruelty.

John's dog, Able, was found dead atop a washing machine after authorities responded to the fire.

The dog's fur was not singed, and one of Guerrero's three public defenders, Denise Abrams, said that there was no physical evidence to prove what actually killed the dog. Including the charge at trial could inflame anyone on the jury with a strong attachment to animals, Abrams argued.

County Attorney Doug Camacho said it made sense to include the charges together because the state would present the same evidence for both John and Able's deaths.

Camacho said the state would offer evidence at trial that the dog was alive shortly before the fire.

Judge Rick Williams ruled against separating the animal cruelty charge from the murder case. He said that jurors with strong feelings for animals would be screened during the jury selection process.

Guerrero also faces charges of disorderly conduct with a weapon, aggravated assault on a deputy, resisting arrest and criminal damage in connection with an incident on April 16, 2008, in which Guerrero allegedly fired a bullet through a television set at his mother's house.

Shawn A. Guerrero, 26, of Kingman is charged with felony first-degree murder, arson of an occupied structure, two counts of criminal damage, tampering with physical evidence, disorderly conduct with a weapon, resisting arrest and animal cruelty.

Guerrero is accused of shooting his father John Guerrero 59, of Kingman twice and then setting fire to his father's house in September.

Shawn Guerrero then fled the area and was arrested by Tempe Police officers a day later.

Judge Robert Moon moved Guerrero's competency hearing to 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 3. Judge Rick Williams was assigned the case when he took office on Jan. 1.

The hearing will determine weather Guerrero is mentally competent to stand trial and whether he was legally sane at the time of the offense.
