Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A family with a history of caring for unwanted horses is asking the public to help find its stolen mustang, which was rustled last month.

"Our animals are our whole life," said Vickie Talley of Antelope. "Horses we have taken in usually have suffered from some form of abuse or starvation."

The horse thieves who took Jewelie, a sorrel-colored steed with a white sock marking, knew exactly what they wanted, said Talley.

Talley, whose family has owned the horse for more than two years, said the thieves planned the heist, casing the Rio Linda property where the 13-year-old mare was kept.

Then, according to Talley, the thief or thieves came Nov. 6 with tools to cut three fences and a chain to a locked gate to get Jewelie, leaving five of the Talleys' horses.

The thieves wanted Jewelie and only Jewelie, said Talley.

"They specifically targeted her," she said.

Since Jewelie was stolen, the Talley family, including father Scott and daughter Sarah, 18, has distributed 600 leaflets and posted the theft on the NetPosse.com, a Web site with information about stolen horses.

"We have searched high and low for this animal," said Vickie Talley. "This is a very important horse to Sarah."

Jewelie has a distinctive white sock-like marking above her right rear hoof and a scar under her mane on the right side of her neck.

The Talleys said the horse at one time was a wild mustang, adopted from the Bureau of Land Management by a former owner.

Further description of the horse on NetPosse.com notes that Jewelie "needs medication, sometimes a little hard to catch. Great after hand/rope on her. Does not like her face rubbed unless she knows you. Had three babies."

A cash reward of an undetermined amount is offered for Jewelie, a well-mannered horse skilled in gymkhana, barrel racing and trail riding.

"Our friend lets us use property for the horses, and we spend what little money we have to care for these animals," said Talley. "A couple of the horses are older and will just live out their lives with us. Another came in very thin and we barely saved her."

The Sacramento County Sheriff's department has been investigating the case, Talley said. She asks anyone who has information to call her cell phone at (916) 416-7106.
