Pittsburg County deputies are searching for a suspect in the shooting and beheading of a large bull elk near the town of Pittsburg.
A local game warden contacted authorities after discovering the headless carcass earlier this week in a field south of Pittsburg.
Pittsburg County Deputy Tracy Parrott says the 1,100-pound animal was mutilated and that the way its head was chopped off would prevent it from being mounted.
Elk are rare in Oklahoma, and hunting is prohibited without a special permit.
Former game warden Mike Wiggington says the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation released several elk in the 1960s at the Pushmataha Wildlife Management Area in southeast Oklahoma.
Case UpdatesA $3,000 reward is being offered as authorities search for a suspect in the case of a bull elk that was killed and decapitated in southern Pittsburg County.
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's Operation Game Thief has contributed $500 toward the total, while the Humane Society of the United States kicked in $2,500.
Game Warden Shane Fields says the killing of the bull elk earlier this month has upset many in the area. He says hunters are particularly miffed that the elk's carcass was left to rot.
