The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrested five people for Class A misdemeanors and issued 18 Class C citations in connection with an illegal cockfighting event Sunday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also arrested one suspect.

Arrested at scene and charged with Promotion of Gambling and Gambling Paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor, were: Oscar Luis Anaya, 34; Francisco Javier Olivo, 38; Jose Lazaro Ponce, 32; Miguel Figuero, 60; and Luis Arias Benitez, 41 (also charged with keeping a Gambling Place, a Class A misdemeanor).

Approximately 55 vehicles were towed from the scene.

Around noon Sunday, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office District 3 Patrol Division responded to a complaint of illegal bird fighting in the 16700 block of FM 1485 in New Caney.

When the deputy arrived, he observed numerous vehicles parked on the property and several suspects fleeing the scene on foot into the woods.

Once the deputy secured the scene, the Precinct 5 Constable's Office Livestock Officers investigated for cruelty to animals and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit for gambling violations.

The SIU obtained a search warrant for the suspect's premises, which was issued by 359th state District Court Judge Kathleen Hamilton.

Items recovered at the scene included 20-30 dead roosters, approximately 150 live fighting roosters, testosterone and other substances used to enhance the fighting capabilities of the birds, spurs, syringes, and other paraphernalia. A pistol and two shotguns and approximately $4,000 in U.S. currency also were seized.

The SIU was assisted by the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force and DPS highway patrol, Houston SCPA, Precinct 5 Constable Livestock officers and District 3 patrol.
