Dog shot to death
Greenwich, NY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Dec 4, 2008
County: Washington

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A Greenwich couple is in shock after their 2-year-old pitbull terrier was shot while going for a walk.

Paige Sidler was baby-sitting her nephews at the Hand Mellon Farm in Greenwich on Thursday afternoon while her boyfriend, Drew Davis, was walking the pitbull, Whitey, along with his mother, Blueberry.

Sidler says Whitey was running down a trail the couple frequently take the dogs down and disappeared on the other side of the hill, about 30 feet from his property line.

A little while later, Davis then heard a single shot ring out.

A few minutes later, Davis found Whitey dead, with a single bullet wound going through the dog's side.

"My boyfriend didn't see him get shot, when he came around the other side of the hill, he realized what had happened," Sidler said.

The State Police in Greenwich are investigating the case. So far, authorities do not have any suspects, police said.

"It was literally 25 footsteps from the trail," Sidler said. "My boyfriend couldn't have been 35 feet away from him."

Davis apparently saw a goateed man in camouflage clothes standing nearby at the time of the shooting, Sidler said. Davis questioned two other hunters in the area who denied shooting the dog.

The couple would also take the dogs with them when they went bike riding on the trail. They were training Whitey to be a service dog.

Whitey was also becoming a staple at West Mountain, where the couple would bring him when they went skiing.

Sidler said the shooting has unnerved her.

"I take my nephews back there. Should we be scared to go back there?" Sidler said. "The dog was standing still, the dog wasn't barking and he barked at everything."
