Kitten shot, set on fire Tucson, AZ (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Nov 27, 2008 County: Pima
Disposition: Open
Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
A 3-week-old kitten was found badly burned and left for dead in mid-town. Investigators believe the kitten is the victim of animal abuse.
The kitten was found on Thanksgiving by a good samaritan, and taken to the Pima Animal Care Center. Pima Animal Care officials say the kitten was found near Grant and Fairview.
Claire Sollars works for a local rescue organization. She picked up the badly burned kitten from the Pima Animal Care Center.
Sollars says, "He head severe burns to the back of him. We thought he was a girl at first because he was that badly burned. His ears are burned. The vet thinks he'll probably lose some of the ear tissue. He also had a BB pellet in his side."
Sollars later placed the kitten with his new foster mom Shannon McDonough. She named him Dexter.
McDonough says, "I just can't imagine someone doing this to him. I wouldn't be surprised if the person who did this to him probably killed his siblings."
There is the possibility that Dexter may not survive, because his injuries are so severe.
Marsh Myers is with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. She says, "In animal crimes, more than anything else, you're really dependent on physical evidence."
Unfortunately, in this case the animal was a stray, and no one knows where he originated.
Myers adds, "Somebody who takes any kind of satisfaction inflicting suffering on other things is by definition a dangerous person and somebody we need to identify."
