Police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after an opossum was found burned alive in the New South Wales central west last month.

Members of an animal rescue organisation were called to a park in William Street at Bathurst on November 18 after receiving reports a possum was being harassed.

They arrived to find a possum had been set on fire.

The animal was rescued and taken to a nearby vet, where it had to be put down because of its injuries.
