A man told the Humane League of Lancaster County staff that he saw a woman throw five kittens off a bridge. The grey tiger kittens may have already lost a few of their nine lives. The 8-week-old animals survived a harrowing ordeal.

A man brought them to the Humane League of Lancaster County Friday after witnessing a woman throw them off a bridge over the Conestoga River.

The kittens were in a burlap bag with a rock. The bag rock landed on the riverbank. One of the five kittens was dead.

"It's awful. It's horrible. It disgusts me. I can't believe anybody would do that," said Jodi Rutt, of the Humane League of Lancaster County. "We're looking for the person that did it. Officers plan on prosecuting if we can find who did this."

Staff veterinarian Dr. Shaka Monroe found the kittens to be in good shape. He's said they are lucky to be alive.

"It's sad one wasn't able to survive. Probably, if someone had not been there to rescue them, (it) could have been worse if stuck in the bag for however long," Monroe said.

The Humane League wants people to know they can drop off unwanted or stray animals at their shelter for no charge any time of day or night.

Staff members have named the kittens Sea Bass, Rainbow Trout, Starfish and Flounder. They are just happy someone stepped in and saved them. All four of the kittens have been adopted. If found, the animal abuser could face a fine and possible prison sentence.
