Sheriff's deputies were sent to the Shorter farm on Oct. 28 after getting a report from neighbors of dead and neglected cattle in a pasture owned or rented by Shorter. Four dead cattle carcasses were seen in two pastures, according to the deputy's report.
In April, Shorter and his wife, Brenda, were charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder with premeditation. Shorter has pleaded not guilty to the charge, and a trial is scheduled for January.
Case UpdatesA misdemeanor animal neglect charge has been dismissed against a rural Dover farmer.
Assistant Olmsted County Attorney Laurie Anderson dismissed the charge against William James Shorter, 36, "in the interest of justice."
Sheriff's deputies had gone to the farm on Oct. 28 after getting a report from neighbors of dead and neglected cattle in a pasture owned or rented by Shorter. Four cattle carcasses were seen in two pastures, the deputies said.
According to Shorter's attorney, Gaylon Pittman of La Crosse, Wis., Shorter was not the owner of the cattle or responsible for their well-being at the time of the incident.
The charge was dismissed Thursday. | Source: Post Bulletin - Dec 19, 2008 Update posted on Dec 21, 2008 - 10:34PM |
