Investigators raided a house at 241 Drake Court near Seamans Neck Road in Levittown and found a dozen pit bulls. They believe the dogs were trained to fight.
In the backyard of the house, officers found what they call "fighting implements." Heavy chains may have been used to strengthen the pit bulls' necks. They also found a hanging rope, which may have been used to train the pit bulls to bite to kill. Investigators add that there are other physical signs showing some dogs may have already been in fights.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said two men who lived in the house were arrested. Police did not release their names or the charges because the investigation is still ongoing, and there may be more arrests.
SPCA officers said the training of fight dogs is fairly common in Nassau County because the breeders stand to make thousands of dollars from the bets made on dog fights. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
