The Atlanta Humane Society is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for hanging a dog in Albany.

This week, the Dougherty County Police Department found a dead dog hanging by its collar at a home in Albany. It has not yet been determined whether or not the crime was an accident, but if it was not, the person or people responsible could face up to one year in prison. Police are still searching for clues. Captain Jimmy Sexton with DCP says one year is the maximum sentence for the misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. However, it can also come with a $1,000 fine. There is also a felony animal cruelty charge for more serious offenses which carries up to five years in prison or a $15,000 fine. In order to be charged with either, Sexton says the act must be done with intention to harm the animal without good reason.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Captain Jimmy Sexton at the Dougherty County Police Department at (229) 430-6600.
