Puppy's ears cut off with knife, scissors
Science Hill, KY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Oct 22, 2008
County: Pulaski

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Michael Salyers

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Michael Salyers tells 27 Newsfirst, he got a 6-week-old puppy Wednesday from someone giving them away, and he decided to cut its ears and tail off changing how it looked.

Salyers admits to the crime and says he thought the cuts would eventually heal.

Salyers was immediately taken to jail when Science Hill police were notified of the crime. They say he tried to cut the puppy's ears and tail off with a knife, and when it didn't work he used scissors instead.

Salyers is now behind bars at the Pulaski County Detention Center, charged with Animal Cruelty. He will appear in court next Thursday.

Doctors from the Somerset Animal Hospital say the puppy is now recovering and is expected to be just fine.

Salyers faces a tougher penalty if convicted of abusing the puppy because of another abused dog from Pulaski County named Romeo, that was beaten on tape by his owner.

Under Romeo's Law, dog or cat torture is considered a felony and those convicted could face up to five years in prison.

Case Updates

A Pulaski County judge has ordered a man, charged in a bizarre case of animal cruelty, to have a psychiatric evaluation.

Science Hill police arrested Michael Salyers for allegedly cutting off his puppy's ears and tail.

Salyers has been charged with animal cruelty. Police say he used scissors to mutilate the dog. In a jailhouse interview he told us he just wanted to change the way his dog looked.

The judge will have to decide what happens next with the puppy. The veterinarian caring for the dog says there's been a huge outpouring from the community with people wanting to know how the dog is doing and how they can help.

The vet says the dog is healing well at this time.
