County: Alachua

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Monica S. Baisden

A 19-year-old Gainesville woman was arrested Monday for cruelty to animals in a case involving a puppy so neglected that it had to be euthanized.

Monica S. Baisden of 924 SW 61st St. was arrested on a warrant charging her with cruelty to an animal and inhumane confinement or abandonment of an animal. The charges stem from July 31 when Alachua County Animal Services discovered a lethargic puppy inside a crate at Baisden's home. The puppy reportedly had no food or water in the crate and was covered in its own excrement and urine.

The puppy was taken to a veterinarian who discovered it was infested with maggots. The veterinarian also diagnosed the puppy with tapeworms, fleas and canine parvo virus. The veterinarian determined the puppy was in such poor health that it would be best to euthanize the small animal.

Deputies said the veterinarian told them that it would have taken between six and 21 days for the maggots to hatch. Deputies returned to the home where the puppy had been found to question the resident, Baisden. She reportedly told deputies that the dog belonged to her brother, Marvin Baisden, who was out of town. Baisden allegedly told deputies that she had fed and watered the puppy but would not clean up behind it.

The case was turned over to the State Attorney's office. After additional investigation, the agency requested and received an arrest warrant for Baisden, who was picked up on Monday. She remained in the Alachua County jail on Tuesday.
