Dog-fighting - 10 dogs seized
Chicago, IL (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Oct 11, 2008
County: Lake

Charges: Misdemeanor, Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Leon Huff

Ten pit bulls were seized from a South Side garage Saturday morning after police conducting a search warrant found the scarred and emaciated dogs.

Officers from the Cook County Sheriff's office and the Chicago Police Department entered the residence in the 8300 block of South Emerald Avenue about 10 a.m. and found ten caged pit bulls in the home's garage, Cook County Sheriff's spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.

The dogs ranged in age from 8 weeks to 9 years and were in cages filled with urine and feces, Mateck said.

One of the dogs was severely emaciated and two had scars consistent with being in dogfights, Mateck said.

Officers also found dog-fighting paraphernalia in the home, including "bite sticks" and "spring poles," items used to train the pit bulls for dog fights.

The owner of the home, 50-year-old Leon Huff, was taken into sheriff's police custody and charged with two felony counts of dog fighting, ten counts of cruel treatment to animals and ten counts of violation of owner's duties, Mateck said.

Huff allegedly failed to provide the animals with proper food or veterinary care.

Huff is being held pending a bond hearing Sunday in the Cook County Criminal Courthouse at 2600 S. California Ave.

The sheriff's department and Chicago Police worked together on the seizure after receiving information leading them to the home.
