Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

At first glance the female rottweiler mix appears to be just like any other dog waiting for adoption. But there are signs of abuse. The dog was found Monday morning in the 1500 block of See Street. A resident called Calcasieu Animal Services after she found the dog running around the neighborhood with a heavy chain embedded into its neck.

"We cut as much of the chain away as we could, but it still has the lock of the chain embedded in the neck. The chain is embedded like an inch deep and the actual lock piece is even deeper. Too deep for us to try and attempt to cut out," said Calcasieu Animal Services Director Rita Cavenaugh.

"Cassidy" as they now call her, will undergo surgery to remove the chain. Cavenaugh has worked in animal services for nearly 20 years and says though it's not the worst case she's seen, it's still very disturbing.

Cavenaugh estimates Cassidy is only about five months old and says judging by her condition she's likely been restrained on that chain the entire time of her short life. But despite all this little dog has been through she still wants to give love.

"Her spirit is awesome! The mere fact that she is running around with us, she is off that chain, she is full of life and full of excitement and I think she is just like every other animal -- we need to -- stop and remember these are important living, breathing, feeling creatures and they deserve the best of whatever we can give them," said Cavenaugh.

In this case, man's best friend got the worst... Something Cavenaugh says is against the law and won't be tolerated.

"The largest thing that we see is neglect and neglect is cruelty. You man not check on a dog every day, but to allow a chain to grow and embed itself into the neck of an animal is just not right," said Cavenaugh. "We're looking to the public to let us know who owns this animal, so we can prosecute. Otherwise our hope is to get the dog a happy, loving home where it's never on a chain again."
