Cat lover Anthony Adams is fearing for the safety of children after he found his pet cat Midge with a bullet wound in the leg.
The cat's right foreleg was shattered by a hollow-tip .22 bullet at Waitara's East Beach.
"With a trigger happy prat like that around nowhere is safe," Mr Adams said.
"Whoever did this isn't fit to have a licence.
"Kids play in that place. I've seen them a few times,"
Mr Adams found Midge curled up and bleeding on his bed just after lunch on Tuesday. The tiny cat had managed to hobble back home after being shot. The leg was later amputated.
"There was a good chance they were trying to kill her but she was probably crouched down so the bullet hit her leg and broke up rather than going into her chest. She's lucky, I suppose," Mr Adams said.
That the shooting occurred in an urban area has caused Waitara police significant concern.
Senior Sergeant Matt Prendergast said they did not want to see people start shooting rifles in town and were treating the incident seriously.
"Certainly if anyone knows anything about this we would be very interested in hearing from them. We want to make sure this is not the start of a trend." References
