Puppy's ears cut down to cartilage
Huntington, WV (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Oct 15, 2008
County: Cabell

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Benjamin Adkins

Police believe a 48-year-old man cut the ears off a puppy and threatened to burn a house in the Guyandotte neighborhood of Huntington, according to criminal complaints filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court.

The Huntington Police Department arrested Benjamin Jefferson Adkins of Huntington. He was charged with felony threats of terrorist acts and cruelty to animals. His bond was $100,000.

Police responded to Adkins' Tiernan Street residence about 7:42 p.m. Wednesday with the Huntington Fire Department. The complaints charge Adkins had been setting several fires in a nearby wooded area. The fires followed verbal threats to burn a neighbor's house located on North High Street, according to the complaints and a police report. North High Street is located near Tiernan Street.

While investigating the fires, officers received information about a 10-week-old dog with its ears cut off. Officers found the puppy in Adkins' back yard. The complaint states "the pup's ears had been cut very low into the cartilage and was still bleeding." Police found a knife in Adkins' pocket. The knife had blood and hair on it.

The puppy was taken by animal control. The officer believed it would be put to sleep.
