The rash of cat and dog torturing continues, with the case of a cat who's tail was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire on the city's west side, 1200 WOAI news reports.

A letter carrier say some youngsters torturing the cat on El Paso Street. The letter carrier called the Animal Defense League, which rescued the female cat, who is believed to be only eight months old.

The cat's mutilated tail will be amputated, but the animal should survive. Officials say the letter carrier has identified the west side home where the youngsters live, and arrests are expected.

Police report a disturbing rash of animal mutilations in the past month, including a cat that was burned with acid, a cat which was killed in Castle Hills, and a dog that was stabbed on the city's east side.

An anonymous donor has allowed the ADL to up the reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible to $5,000 and people who have information are asked to contact police.

Case Updates

The Animal Defense League opted Thursday to double its reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who might have been involved in a spate of recent animal abuse cases.

The award pot started at $3,000 and was increased to $5,000 after an anonymous donation last week. An additional anonymous donation now brings it to $10,000.

Animal abuse, though not new in San Antonio, is occurring at an unusually high rate - including four animals severely injured during the past two weeks - said Defense League director Ron Aaron. Those animals included El Paso, a kitten whose tail was amputated this week after it appeared to have been held to a flame; Austin, an Irish setter with a severely broken leg; Foster, a golden retriever that was stabbed multiple times and Barnabus, a cat that appeared to have been burned with acid.

Both dogs were operated on but died at the shelter. Authorities doubt the four cases are related.

While it's difficult to solve animal cruelty cases when there are no witnesses, people tend to brag about their misdeeds, Aaron said, adding that he hopes the increased award money will spur tips.

Animal cruelty is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years of incarceration.
