Cat burned with battery acid
San Antonio, TX (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Oct 9, 2008
County: Bexar

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A cat is being treated after he was found severely burned on the Southwest Side.

A woman named him Barnabus after he walked into her yard on Linares. Barnabus was brought to the Animal Defense League for treatment.

ADL's veterinarian believes the burns were intentionally inflicted, most likely caused by battery acid. Barnabus is being treated for his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

ADL Executive Director Ron Aaron said he and his colleagues are angered by the increased violence against animals they are seeing in our community.

"We believe the perpetrators are teenage boys or males in their early twenties. Someone knows who is committing these acts," Aaron noted. "But unless people with information come forward there is no way to prosecute these violent criminals."

Aaron said in the wake of a report that once again cats are being mutilated, most recently in Castle Hills, the Animal Defense League is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual (or individuals) responsible for these acts.

Just last week, ADL tried to save a dog who had been brutally stabbed with a knife. Unfortunately the dog, named Foster, died from his injuries.

"We have treated dogs who had acid poured on their backs, a cat whose tail was burned to a stub, a dog found hanging from a tree, and now Barnabus, who is the sweetest, most loving cat you would ever want to meet," said Aaron. "The violence has to stop. The perpetrators need to be behind bars not on our streets where they can continue to abuse helpless animals."

Animal Defense League officials are asking anyone with information about these and other crimes of violence against animals to call (210) 655-1481 ext. 111.

"We will protect your confidentiality," Aaron said. "But by making that call, you may help stop the violence in San Antonio."
