A family woke up to find their dog shot and killed inside the fenced-in backyard of their Buena Avenue home.
The Labrador/chow mix owned by the Burleson family was found shot once in the neck Sunday, Oct. 5, said Monroe police Lt. Brian Curlis.
"We found some evidence that it was a shotgun because there was what you call a 'wad' - the thing that holds all the pellets in place. We found that at the scene, but we didn't find the shell casing," he said.
"The injury to the dog also appeared to be a shotgun," he said.
Curlis said the Burleson family didn't hear any noise.
"The officers did a neighborhood canvass, then walked around and spoke to a neighbor. He said he thought he heard a loud gunshot about 5 a.m. Sunday morning," he said.
Curlis said the shooting appears to be random, and that there have been no reports about the dog running loose or barking.
"It's not a nuisance dog or anything like that," he said.
The shooting remains under investigation.
