Alpacas found starving, some dead
Thornville, OH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Oct 1, 2008
County: Perry

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: James LePage

A Thornville-area man was charged today with animal cruelty by humane officers who say they found dead and starving alpacas at his farm.

James LePage, 66, will face charges in Perry County Court, said John Price of the Perry County Humane Society.

Humane officers visited LePage's farm on Oct. 1 and found the carcasses of two alpacas that had been dead for more than a month and three alpacas that were malnourished and in poor shape, Price said.

Eight goats also were removed from LePage's property. He has denied mistreating the animals. Alpacas, which are native to South America, are valued for their hair, which is used in textiles.
