Trammel and Tamela Sturdivant have been charged with animal cruelty after police executed a search warrant at 3408 Gay St. on Sept. 27.

Officers from the McKamey Animal Trust were called to the scene after 12 pitbulls, including three with pups, were found in "inhumane" conditions.

Police said it appeared the dogs may have been used for fighting. Officers said they were chained with heavy chains and that some had untreated wounds and lacerations.

Police said the dogs appeared underweight and there was no food or water visible.

The dogs were removed from the house.
