A man was arrested on charges that he beat his girlfriend at their home, then threw a small puppy on the ground. Luis R. Torres, 27, was arrested on charges of domestic battery and animal cruelty. Pinellas sheriff's deputies said Torres punched, slapped and pulled the hair of his live-in girlfriend. Torres also is accused of picking up a small puppy at the residence, lifting the animal over his head and throwing it on the ground, deputies said. The puppy was knocked unconscious, then taken to a local animal hospital with potential internal injuries. The conditions of both the girlfriend and the dog could not be learned Monday. Torres was being held without bail Monday at the Pinellas County Jail.
