Dog neutered with elastic band
Middlefield, OH (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Mar 3, 2008
County: Geauga

Disposition: Convicted

Abuser names unreleased

A Geauga County farmer was convicted Friday [Sept 19, 2008] of cruelty to animals for neutering his dog with an elastic band commonly used to neuter farm animals. Calves are routinely castrated by placing tight bands around the skin over the blood vessels that supply the testes. The bands stay in place for weeks, until the unwanted organs shrivel and drop off.

The Geauga Humane Society and attorney Jeffrey Holland said that is inhumane treatment for a dog. The Middlefield man was sentenced to one year of probation, during which he must have his pets neutered by a veterinarian and allow humane officers to randomly inspect his premises. He faces up to 90 days in jail if he violates probation.
